FutureMedia℠ explores new paradigms in how content is created, distributed and consumed.

Consistently ranked in the top ten in the world for technology universities, Georgia Tech is home of FutureMedia – a global open innovation collaborative initiative focused on discovering, creating, commercializing, and shaping the future of media. With over 19 centers, 37 living labs and nearly 500 faculty working in this space, Georgia Tech is a leader in discovering what is next.

The vision and mission of FutureMedia℠ is to develop physical and virtual places where entrepreneurs, industry, venture capitalists and universities are invited to experiment, discover, create, commercialize, scale, and shape the future of digital, social, and mobile media — with the ultimate goal of serving as an economic and research growth engine for all who participate.

The areas of focus under the FutureMedia℠ umbrella include research in Enabling Fundamental Technologies (e.g. Cloud Computing, Simulation/Modeling, Systems Integration, Mobility, Advanced Analytics), Application Domains (e.g. Contextual Location, Enhanced TV, Gaming, Augmented Reality), and Business Domains (e.g. Business Models, Commercialization, Policy/Regulation).

Why now?

Digital, social, mobile and multi media are fundamentally changing business models and transforming howFM2 we communicate. We are in the middle of an evolution – some will survive, some will fail, and some will thrive. Industries from journalism, health care, energy, communications, and computing are re-evaluating how they will adapt and grow.

Georgia has world-class university research, proven engineering and commercialization expertise, a successful community of entrepreneurs – and leading digital media, communications, and entertainment industries. Georgia Tech is a leader in systems integration and technology creation and is willing to take a leadership role in fostering open innovation. About FutureMedia℠

FutureMedia℠ is Georgia Tech’s global collaborative initiative whose focus is to explore, enable and transform new ways of how content is created, distributed and consumed. Based on market success, the initiative has grown to be part of a larger, newly created Institute of People and Technology (IPaT). IPaT is a network of world-class academic researchers and industry innovators collaborating on groundbreaking research that is altering the fields of media, education, healthcare and humanitarian systems.

FutureMedia℠ Outlook 2012

The FutureMedia℠ Outlook 2012 is an annual multimedia report that offers Georgia Tech’s viewpoint on the future of media and its impact on people, business and society over the next five to seven years. For each of the six megatrends, the Outlook 2012 presents fresh and objective insights into those technologies and business practices that will significantly impact the converging media ecosystem. In addition, the report includes demonstrative clips and video interviews with leading Georgia Tech researchers offering real-world examples of how the Institute is proactively innovating in these areas.
